Abstract
A new kind of device made by the insertion of a nematic liquid-crystal layer between two polymeric sheets with rough surfaces is presented and discussed. The device is experimentally shown to have the same optical behavior as polymer-dispersed liquid-crystal (PDLC) films. The optical behavior as a function of temperature and of the applied electric field is experimentally studied. A first quantitative study is performed by the use of a mathematical model originally introduced for PDLC’s.
