Abstract
On a heated metal surface a two-dimensional (2D) Bose–Einstein (BE) gas of surface plasmons (SPs) exists. At the edge of the surface, SP-photon conversion (SPPC) is possible. Here we present the results of a measurement of the electromagnetic radiation caused by the SPPC at the right-angular boundary of the metal surface. The data for the photon angular distribution is in good agreement with the Sommerfeld–Maluzhinets theory. The observed effects may be useful for the measurement of optical characteristics of real metals in the IR region. The proposed method is more accurate than methods based on Fresnel relations.
