Abstract
This paper discusses the transmission of light through a layered birefringent structure with
periodic variation of the refractive indices and surface microrelief. A method is proposed for
calculating the complex amplitude of the light wave as it passes through the successive
layers of the structure and the diffraction efficiency for normal incidence of the light. The results
of the computations are compared with those of a direct integration of Maxwell?s equations
by the finite-difference method. The satisfactory agreement of the results of the computations
makes it possible to use the new method to design new optical elements and
devices.
