Abstract
This paper discusses the gamma-ray-induced luminescence of quartz glasses fabricated using sol-gel technology, which makes it possible to obtain especially pure samples. By irradiating the glasses from a 60Co source, a band appears at 1.9 eV in the induced-luminescence spectra. An energy-level diagram for explaining the observed effect is presented. The given glass is recommended for the fabricating optical fiber. A block diagram is proposed for an optical-fiber gamma-ray sensor based on an optical fiber fabricated using the sol-gel process.
