Abstract
Room-temperature ultraviolet emission of ions at 298 , 364 , and 391 nm was obtained in by continuous-wave diode laser excitation of . Power dependence analysis demonstrates that five- and six-photon upconversion processes populate the and states, respectively. We believe that the population originates from the cross relaxation of the ions, while subsequent energy transfer from to excites the state to the upper state. High multiphoton-induced ultraviolet emission is also expected for other trivalent rare-earth ions similar to .
