Analytical qualitative modeling of passive and active metamaterials [Invited]
Interaction of light with matter has been studied for centuries. With the advances in fabrication of artificial materials with unusual properties, it became important to describe them analytically to gain insight in their response in order to develop design strategies. This has proven mostly impossible with previously developed techniques, and most such problems are currently solved purely numerically. In this work, the authors review several forms of macroscopic Maxwell's equations in media, multipole decomposition and effective medium theory for media exhibiting dipole and quadrupole responses. They give several examples of applying these models for studying symmetric and non-symmetric structures, and describe several important effects in metamaterials.
