Abstract
The resolution of ground based astronomical images is limited by atmospheric turbulence to angular sizes that are much larger than the theoretical diffraction limit of large telescopes. Adaptive optics systems offer the possibility of correcting the turbulence induced image degradation and producing near diffraction limited images; however, in general, the achievable long-exposure resolution will be somewhere between the atmospheric seeing and the telescope diffraction limit.
