Abstract
This paper reports the investigation of the energy transfer between Er3+ and several lanthanides ions (such as Ce3+, Pr3+) to improve the laser properties of Er3+ activated melilite at 1.55 μm in the Yb:Er:Ce:Ca2Al2SiO7 (CAS) and at 2.7 μm in the Er:Pr:SrLaGa3O7 (SLG) laser materials. Rate equation formalism is used to predict the population ratio of the Er3+ emitting levels in the codoped laser materials. Room temperature laser oscillation at 1.55 μm has been obtained on the Yb:Er:Ce:CAS with a low threshold of 20 mW and a slope efficiency around 5.5%.
