This invited presentation addresses the use of fiber optic sensors in the oilfield, discussing past and current trends as well as applications of fiber Bragg grating and OTDR techniques for different pointwise and distributed measurements in the upstream segment of the oil & gas industry. Also addressed are some of the challenges and operational difficulties that must be faced in order to move sensors from the laboratory to the field trial and commercialization stages.
