Abstract
The alloy semiconductor Hg1–xCdxTe has been widely employed as an IR detector material. We have been studying nonlinear optical effects in Hg1–xCdxTe including optical phase conjugation. The ability to tailor the band gap by adjusting the x value during growth makes it possible to match the band gap to the wavelength of the pump laser. For x ≅ 0.22, the band gap at ~77 K is coincident with the 10.6-μm output of a CO2 laser.
