Abstract
Phase conjugation via degenerate four-wave mixing in silicon has been studied extensively in the last few years. The dominant mechanism for the nonlinear process in this system is the formation of free charge carriers by the promotion of electrons to the conduction band. The sinusoidal interference pattern of the laser produces a sinusoidal population of electrons and holes, which in turn produce a thick phase grating.
