Abstract
Recent experimental and theoretical studies on KrF excimers demonstrate the possibility of attaining intrinsic efficiency higher than 10 %. However, this value can be obtained only at a relatively low laser intensity (≲10 MW/cm2). Considering the required fusion driver energy of several millijoules in ~10 nsec, the total beam cross section of the final amplifiers operating at 10-MW/cm2 level amounts to several thousands of m2 Even if pulse compression is introduced, the operation at the much higher-power-density level is desirable to reduce the dimension of the drivers to a reasonable scale.
