Measurement of the third-order optical nonlinearities of organic compounds

For applications such as optical switching using materials large third-order nonlinear susceptibilities χ(3), it is important to know separately the magnitudes of the real part and the imaginary part of χ(3). The real part leads to nonlinear refraction, and the imaginary part gives rise to nonlinear absorption of light. We present here the values of the real and imaginary parts of χ(3) of several transition metalorganic polymers.
