Abstract
We explore the influence of metal substitution in phthalocyanines on their nonlinear optical susceptibility. Specifically, the χ(3) at 1.064 μm of metal free tetrakis- (cumylphenoxy)phthalocyanine and that of several metal complexes including Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Pt, and Pb are reported and compared. The third-order susceptibility of these phthalocyanines in CHCl3 solution was measured by degenerate four-wave mixing at 1.064 μm, far from the nearest strong absorption. The laser pulse width was nominally 35 ps and intensities of up to several GW/cm2 in each of the pump beams were used. The solution χ(3) was measured relative to CS2.
