Abstract
Absolute population densities of rotation-vibration states of molecular nitrogen N2 in an active CO2 laser gas medium were measured using coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS).1,2 Nitrogen is very important for efficient CO2 laser operation.3 Two sealed off, diffusion cooled devices were investigated; a conventional dc excited laser and an rf excited waveguide laser. The influence of the laser radiation field on the vibrationally excited nitrogen was studied by operating the discharge with and without laser oscillation. The N2 population density was monitored by a broadband CARS system with a 3-D beam configuration for high spatial resolution.
