Abstract

A bent waveguide laser diode (LD) such as a ring LD or a half-ring LD using a curved waveguide has been proposed as a component of optical integrated devices. However, operation has been difficult to achieve because of the large threshold current required by the large cavity for small bending loss. Therefore, a bent waveguide LD using a total reflection mirror has recently been proposed, and a small size waveguide with relatively small loss has been fabricated using a reflection bend.1 We discuss the bending loss dependence on the bending angle of a GaAs/AlGaAs bent waveguide LD with total reflection mirrors (Fig. 1), and interference of the LD beams is demonstrated.
