All-optical switching in a strained-layer asymmetric Fabry-Perot étalon

Abstract

Absorption-modulated asymmetric Fabry-Perot (AFP) étalons have been widely reported. Although most rely on electro-optic effects,1,2 all-optical modulation with GaAs/AlGaAs qxiantum wells has also been observed.3 Here we report all optical switching in a normally off AFP with InGaAs/GaAs-strained quantum wells. The device exhibits a good contrast ratio and low insertion loss with the transparency of the GaAs at the operating wavelengths facilitating the integration of such devices with other optical components.
