Abstract
More than three decades have passed since lasers were invented. Based on laser technologies, opto-electronics has become one of the fundamental technologies for information-age infrastructures, such as communications and storage. Optoelectronics appears to be penetrating into much wider areas. Among these are optical interconnections and switching. This paper reviews the recent optoelectronics advances in optical interconnections, optical switching, and optical disk memories. We also discuss the future direction of these technologies.
