Abstract

Wavelength conversion is an important function in future wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems and lightwave networks. Wavelengths can be converted by using semiconductor lasers1 and semiconductor optical amplifiers.2 However, signal properties degrade after passing through optical filters because of chirping.3 Here, we discuss the effects of wavelength chirping in semiconductor laser wavelength converters on optical fiber transmissions and show that lowering the linewidth enhancement factor (α-parameter) is effective to improve transmission properties. We also discuss how the properties change when using dispersion shifted fibers.
