Abstract
In optical communication systems, the integration of semiconductor laser amplifier (SLA) with Distributed Feedback (DFB) laser will play an important role for Cable TV., wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) and optical soliton for its high power and dynamic single longitudinal mode output characteristics.1,2 The Gain-coupled (actually pure gain and loss coupling structures are difficult to realize)3 DFB lasers have demonstrated superior performances to index and phase adjusted DFB lasers because they provide low threshold gain, high spectral selection in favor of the mode oscillating at the Bragg wavelength with a relative immunity from external facet reflection,4 so the integration with Gain-coupled DFB lasers will greatly enhance the ability of systems. In this paper, we analyze the characteristics of an actual mixed index and gain-coupled DFB laser considering the affection of SLA and modified the optical amplifier model proposed by I. D. Henning5 and make it be properly used for integrated structure with an effective reflectivity.
