Abstract

Optical fiber fusion splice to PLC (planar lightwave circuit) on silica substrate is effective, because reflection at fusion splice is little and fusion splice almost never depends on ambient temperature. But, static fatigue parameters of fusion splice are unknown. In this paper, a simplified 2-dimensional model of fusion splice is represented. Fig. 1(a) shows fusion splice portion. Crack propagates from comer portion, since stress concentrates at the comer of fiber to PLC. The stress intensity factor of Fig. 1(a) is unknown. Therefore, we approximated fusion splicing portion by 2-dimensional model of Fig. 1(b). The stress intensity factor of Fig. 1(b) is given by equation (1).
