Abstract

Infrared absorption data can yield useful information about the molecular structure of cells. Since IR spectra are difficult to obtain from single cells, we have developed a technique called fluorescence detected infrared (FDIR) spectroscopy (Tromberg, et al., 1993), which uses the relatively high quantum efficiency of fluorescence to indicate IR absorption and a free electron laser (FEL) to provide the wavelength-tunable IR energy.
