Abstract

The light in the near-infrared (NIR) region from 700 to 1500 nm can penetrate tissues to significant depth. And hemoglobin in circulatory blood in the living tissue has the characteristic absorption spectrum in NIR region responsible to the tissue oxygenation state. Based on the above, we have developed the NIR-oxygen monitor applicable to observe the brain oxygenations in new-born baby and also in adult. There is the direct coupling between the regional neuronal activation and oxygen metabolism in the brain. Here we will show the NIR-imaging of human brain activity during the various mental tasks.
