Squeezed light generation in semiconductors

Abstract

Squeezed light has now been generated in a diverse variety of nonlinear optical media including atomic vapours,1 optical fibres,2 and most efficiently, second-order parametric crystals enhanced by cavities.3 We describe here a scheme for generating femtosecond pulses of quadrature squeezed light in semiconductors. The technique requires no cryogenic cooling or cavity enhancement and can produce substantial squeezing from a short interaction length. By substituting alternative semiconductors in conjunction with appropriate pump lasers, squeezing at a wide variety of wavelengths is now possible.
