Abstract

Sealed-off waveguide CO2 lasers1,2 for use as a local oscillator (LOL) and transmitter (TXL) in a space communications transceiver have been designed, fabricated, and tested. The waveguide laser design approach results in very small, lightweight, rugged devices and also achieves the wide frequency tuning3 required in the LOL because of the Doppler shift of the received signal.
