Abstract
The Center for Coherent Optics in the Research Institute of the U.S. Army Engineer Topographic Laboratories is responsible for basic and applied research in coherent optical techniques leading to improved mapping systems of the future. Several optical and optical/digital pattern recognition techniques have been investigated for potential application in processes associated with the preparation of topographic maps. These techniques involve image-to-image correlation and matched filtering for photogrammetric data reduction; matched filtering for mission photoplotting and control marker recognition; and optical power spectrum analysis for screening aerial photography, extraction of cartographic features, and quality analysis associated with mapping processes.
