Abstract

It is well known that the extraordinary large linear electro-optic effect in inorganic crystals of the perovskite class (e.g., BaTiO31, KNbO32) is significantly influenced by acoustic phonon contributions. The electro-optic response of these materials shows a strong dependence on the frequency of the applied electric field. The largest of the clamped electro-optic coefficients rs (valid at high modulation frequencies) is typically reduced to half of the unclamped effect (rT) occurring at low frequencies.
