Abstract

Er:YAG lasers, due to their radiation strong interaction with human tissue, are going to find application in medicine, particularly in dentistry.1 The present work reports on the setup for computercontrolled modulation of Er:YAG laser beam. The control of the beam intensity by means of conventional electrooptic (EO) modulators meets essential difficulties due to the great wavelength of the Er:YAG laser and absorption of EO materials. We use as the electrooptic media PLZT transparent ceramics—a material with high values of EO coefficients and well transparent up to 5 microns.
