Abstract

In the last decade the interest in optical and nonlinear optical properties of thin films rose considerably. These systems are of significant importance not only from a fundamental point of view but also because of possible applications. In the present report the second-order nonlinear optical properties of thin oriented films of bacteriorhodopsin molecules (bR) are studied by means of the second-harmonic (SH) generation technique. The choice of this type of films is dependent on the topical interest since a better understanding is needed of the bR behavior in such systems, their nonlinear optical properties, and their changes under the external subjections—the CW radiation and the DC electric field.
