Abstract
Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) are rapidly nearing practical widespread implementation in key applications such as data communications. Because of numerous advantages relative to either edge-emitting lasers or light-emitting diodes, even broader application of this device technology is anticipated with further improvements in performance characteristics and wavelength coverage. In many cases, such advances hinge on advances in the underlying materials and process technology. This talk will overview the impact that different epitaxial design and process approaches, including selective oxidation, have had on improving VCSEL performance benchmarks over a broad wavelength range.
