Abstract

The laser-based optical technique of holographic interferometry has been applied to diagnosis of very high enthalpy flows produced in a superorbital expansion tube. This facility, X1, is capable of simulating conditions experienced by spacecraft travelling at superorbital speeds through planetary atmospheres. Holographic interferometry enables visualisation and non-intrusive measurement of integrated gas density.
