Abstract
Under the pulsed laser melting of thin surface layer the velocity of solidification front reaches larger values comparable to those of the atoms diffusion rate in the melt. This results in enhancement of the kinetic effects such as the “capture” of the impurity and alloy’s constituent atoms, segregation suppression, “diffusionless” solidification, etc. As a consequence, the heterogeneous non - equilibrium structure is formed in the surface layer which consists of the stable, metastable crystalline or amorphous phases with high defect concentration in particular, structural vacancies specifying specific properties of the layer formed.
