Abstract

In the last years the X-ray laser (XRL) reseach is strongly influenced by the progress in the field of the ultrashort optical laser development. The use of ps- and fs- lasers working with the chirped pulse amplification technique as drivers for XRL’s has now opened new ways to creat very efficiently a population inversion. Among optical field ionization schemes /1/ also recombination /2/ and collsional /3/ excitation were successfully utilized, leading to XRL’s emitting short X-ray pulses.
