Abstract

The generation of tunable ultraviolet light can be achieved by direct laser action in the ultraviolet or by frequency conversion from the infrared1. To achieve tunable output from an all solid state device at several kHz repetition rate and output powers in the order of one Watt or more, it is necessary to consider Ti:sapphire as the laser medium and frequency double its output. Doubling of the wavelength from 700 to 800 nm with reasonable efficiency is problematic due to the limited selection of non-linear materials. LBO and BBO are typically the materials of choice. The optimum solution depending on the peak pump power available.
