Mode-Controlled Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Lasers for Bandwidth Enhancement of Multimode Fibre Links.

Abstract

There is considerable interest currently in low cost computer interconnects operating at rates of over 1 Gb/s using multimode fibre (MMF). With this fibre being currently the dominant type installed in buildings, transmission distances are limited at these rates. Recently, however, a technique whereby light is injected into the fibre at an offset position has been reported overcoming this limit. Enhancement of the fibre bandwidth by up to a factor of four has been obtained by restricting the set of modes excited within the fibre [1]. It would be preferable, however, if a laser source was available which directly generated locked offset beams for this application.
