Cr4+:forsterite: What is the optimum pump wavelength?

Abstract

Cr:forsterite is one of the first laser materials from the family of Cr4+-doped crystals. The efficiency of Cr:forsterite lasers does not exceed 37% and is much lower then the quantum defect limited value of 87%[1-3]. Thus, the choice of optimum pump wavelength for Cr:forsterite is still important, especially for diode laser pumping. One of the possible loss mechanisms is excited state absorption at pump wavelength [4].
