Towards Quantum Logic in a Mesoscopic Optical Lattice

Abstract

Optical lattices, i.e. periodic arrays of atoms trapped in optical standing waves, are a promising system for quantum logic experiments, as efficient quantum error correction schemes can be implemented here. On the other hand, it is essential in the operation of quantum logic to selectively address and manipulate single qubits. This is difficult to achieve in conventional optical lattices, where the spatial period is of order of half the wavelength of an atomic absorption line. Traditionally, optical lattices have been studied by monitoring their quantized vibrational frequencies.
