Abstract

Matrix assisted laser desorption and ionisation is an important technique in the analysis of organic material. In a standard MALDI [1] setup, the Matrix consists of a crystalline material, with an UV or IR laser for desorption. The use of a water-based Matrix makes it possible to measure organic materials directly in their natural environments. The high absorption of water at 2.8 µm makes the Er3+ laser predestined for desorption. The lower photon energy compared to the UV avoids photochemical breakup of sensitive organic macromolecules.
