Abstract

In order to increase the capacity of optical fiber communication channels one has to be able to control the amplifier noise (Amplified Spontaneous Emisson = ASE), nonlinear effects, especially self phase modulation (SPM), and the effect of group velocity dispersion (GVD). At the receiver these effects lead to fluctuations in the detected signal amplitude causing bit errors limiting the distance of transmission as well as the bitrate.
