Abstract

It has been pointed out recently that pulsed laser sources emitting at 1.54µm in the eye-safe spectral domain are very useful sources for applications such as laser rangefinding or target designation. Compared to other sources based on nonlinear devices, such as Raman-shifted YAG :Nd laser or KTP-OPO, erbium doped glass laser present several advantages : simplicity, reliability, low cost, high beam quality and possibility to passively Q-switched the laser thanks to saturable absorbers (SA) usable around 1.5 µm such as U or Co doped single crystals.
