Abstract

We numerically and experimentally investigate transient characteristics of photonic-crystal surface-emitting lasers with direct sinusoidal modulation toward high-speed, high-power, free-space optical communications. We demonstrate the generation of short-pulse trains with a watt-class peak power and a GHz-class repetition frequency synchronous to the electrical signal.
