Abstract

We propose free-space optical (FSO) communication using a lens-free photonic-crystal surface-emitting laser (PCSEL). We demonstrate PCSEL-based watt-class FSO communication by transmitting an 864-MHz 64QAM OFDM signal for the first time. This demonstration shows the feasibility of a high-power, compact, and lens-free FSO transmitter.
