Abstract
Identification of a signal model is a prerequisite for estimation of a signal. It is often the case for atmospheric lidar returns that the model is unknown and difficult to establish due to contamination by speckle or measurement noise. The goal is then a self-consistent estimation using what is possibly a suboptimal model, but one for which the structure and parameters are justified only by the data and a minimum of a priori assumptions.
