Measurements of Aerosol Backscatter at CO2 Wavelengths with the Airborne Laser True Airspeed System (LATAS)

Abstract

Since 1981, the Royal Signals and Radar Establishment (RSRE) and the Royal Aircraft Establishment (RAE), United Kingdom, have been making detailed measurements of aerosol backscatter coefficients using an airborne, 10.6 micrometer, continuous-wave (CW) focused CO2 Doppler lidar, the Laser True Airspeed System (LATAS) (Foord et al, 1983). The LATAS measures both the backscatter cross-section and the line-of-sight velocity (with respect to the LATAS) of micrometer-sized atmospheric aerosol particles. During this extended period of field trials, the LATAS has proven to be quite rugged and reliable, with a minimal amount of maintenance and with minimal loss of sensitivity.
