Abstract
A summary description of the Solar Optical Telescope is presented highlighting its unique design features. Special emphasis is given to maintaining deep UV response, rejecting solar heat loads, contamination control and to maintaining pointing stability of less than 0.1 arc-sec when subjected to shuttle disturbances. A brief overview of the scientific objectives and how they led to the requirements for the Observatory will also be discussed.
