Modelling of Cable Capacity and Relative Cost/bit Between Amplification Options for Submarine MCF Systems

Abstract

We examine amplification options for repeatered submarine systems using multicore transmission fibre in the context of relative cable capacity and system cost/bit. Multicore EDFAs using either core-pumping or cladding-pumping could offer lower cost/bit than parallel single-core EDFAs but cladding-pumping may reduce cable capacities.
