Theory of the femtosecond dynamics of the laser-induced lattice instability of silicon and GaAs

Abstract

A very intense laser pulse destroys the diamond lattice of semiconductors within 200 fsec, displacing the atoms by 1 Å. This has strong effects on optical properties. Our theory agrees well with experiments.
