Superluminal propagation of femtosecond pulses through multilayer dielectric structures

Open Access Open Access

Abstract

The time taken by a pulse to traverse through one-dimensional photonic bandgaps has been measured using 12 femtosecond optical pulses. The observed anomaleously short traversal times imply superluminal group velocities. Because of the strong attenuation, however, Einstein's causality is not violated.
