Abstract

The micromaser1,2 is a system in which a flow of excited Rydberg atoms interact one at a time1 with one mode of the radiation field in an ultra-high Q-cavity. The micromaser was first realised experimentally in 19852 and subsequently improved3 and operated for two-photon transitions3 as well as one-photon transitions. Theoretically1 it has been tackled from both a microscopic and macroscopic point of view and the connection between both approaches has been made.
