Abstract
Chaos in passive optical systems has been a matter of research for many years. We consider a fiber ring resonator, driven by a sequence of picosecond pulses from a modelocked laser. The main factors that affect the pulse propagation in the fiber ring resonator are self phase modulation, group velocity dispersion, and interference with the driving pulses once every round trip. This combination creates a wealth of new phenomena. On the other hand, the situation is transparent enough to be accessible for analysis.
